AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02) is valid for 3 years and maintained by exam, not by continuing education — there are no CPEs or CEUs to track. The credential is active (within 3 years of your last pass) or expired; there is no grace period.
How AWS SysOps recertification works
Two paths extend it: retake the current SOA-C02, or pass a higher-level AWS exam. Both reset the 3-year clock from the new pass date. AWS opens the recertification window 6 months before expiry; you can sit the exam any time before expiry.
A SysOps-specific wrinkle: SOA-C02 originally shipped with a hands-on "exam lab" section, but AWS removed the lab portion in 2023, returning it to a standard multiple-choice / multiple-response format. Verify the current format on the exam page before you book — AWS has revisited this before. The exam is $150 USD, roughly 130 minutes.
The DevOps-Pro level-up
AWS's stack-renew rule is the highest-leverage path for working ops engineers. Passing a higher-level AWS exam extends every Associate-level cert you hold for a fresh 3-year cycle — including SysOps. The natural level-up is the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02), which builds directly on SysOps and Developer Associate material.
The math mirrors the other Associates: a Professional exam ($300) renews your Associates as a side effect and leaves you with a higher credential, versus $150 for a plain SysOps retake. If you were heading for DevOps Pro anyway, time it inside the SysOps cycle.
Specialty exams (Security, Advanced Networking) also extend the Associates that prepare for them — confirm the current pairings on the AWS Recertification page, as AWS occasionally adjusts which exams renew which certs.
What's on SOA-C02 (and what changed)
SOA-C02 is operations-centric — distinct from the architecture focus of Solutions Architect. Domains: monitoring, logging, and remediation; reliability and business continuity; deployment, provisioning, and automation; security and compliance; networking and content delivery; and cost and performance optimization.
